Telephoning Limits
The Biochemistry service utilises critical telephoning limits for selected tests where results may indicate a potentially life-threatening condition or be of immediate clinical significance. Where results fall outside these limits, they will be communicated directly by telephone to the requesting GP surgery/ward/department or, out of hours, to the appropriate covering clinical service.
The limits are based predominantly on guidance from the Royal College of Pathologists, with some locally agreed additions and adjustments. The table below details the current criteria for telephoning critical results by analyte (Biochemistry tests only). As these limits form part of a controlled document and are subject to periodic review and amendment, users should refer only to the current published version.
