Intro:
Diuretics are a type of medication that increase urine production, resulting in increased salt and water excretion. Diuretics are prescribed for the treatment of hypertension, heart failure, cirrhosis and renal disease. The toxicology laboratory screens for diuretics using LC-QToF-MS. Other anti-hypertensive medications may also be identified and reported if required.Screening for diuretics may be performed in investigation of hyponatraemia or hypokalaemia of unknown cause. Diuretics may be abused for weight loss e.g. by patients with anorexia. Screening may also be performed to assess for non-compliance with prescribed medication
