The Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) B27 is an MHC class 1 molecule whose presence has a strong association with ankylosing spondylitis as well as other disorders including Reiter’s syndrome, psoriatic arthritis and arthropathies associated with inflammatory bowel disease. This assay tests for the presence of HLA-B27 to aid in the diagnosis of patients who present with back pain that may be rheumatoid or ankylosing spondylitis in origin.
Indeterminate results are referred for HLA B27 by PCR.
