Investigation Name:Renal Stone Analysis

Accreditation:UKAS ISO15189 accredited test: On scope

Intro:

Renal stones are a common cause of hospital admission and can develop within the renal pelvis, the ureter or the bladder. It has been estimated that 12% of men and 5% of women will develop renal stone disease by the age of 70 years.
The recurrence rate without medical intervention is 10% within 1 year, 35% within 5 years and 50% at 10 years. The majority of stones are composed of the following substances (in order of decreasing frequency):
• Calcium oxalate with or without phosphate
• Magnesium ammonium phosphate
• Calcium phosphate
• Urate
• Cysteine
• Mixtures of the above
Chemical analysis of renal stones is an important aspect in the management of patients who have renal stone disease and can provide insight into the cause of stones and possible prevention strategies.
