Further information:Tumour markers have poor diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for cancer, and are rarely organ specific.
Indications:
1. AFP (with HCG and LDH) in patients with a testicular mass. Result interpretation should be made in conjunction with testicular ultrasound.
2. Screening of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients who are positive for hepatitis B surface antigen or hepatitis C and who have chronic active hepatitis or cirrhosis.
3. Pre-treatment and follow-up of hepatocellular and testicular (NSGCT) cancers.
