Complex Reference Range:Cell counts are always phoned directly as soon as possible. If no growth on culture a negative report will be issused at 48 hr, and a final report after 5 days. If an urgent ZN for TB is required please indicate clearly on the request form. CSFs are counted by examining a 1mm^3 volume. The clinician must be mindful that cell counts are an estimate as a different result would almost certainly be found if the count was repeated with a different drop of the same specimen. In addition to this, the same counting area, counted by different individuals can also produce some variation in results.

Collection Conditions / Other Information:Please collect CSF into a series of sterile universals. Send samples 1 and 3 to Microbiology for cell count and culture. It is important CSF samples are not left on the ward and should be transported to Microbiology as soon as possible. Out of hours please contact the Microbiology BMS on call via switchboard once the sample has been taken to discuss urgent processing of the sample.
