Test Category: Immunology

Investigation Name:Gastric parietal cell antibody (GPC)

Alias or Abbreviation:GPC

Intro:

Indication: Autoimmune gastritis with or without pernicious anaemia Further information: Forms part of the Liver Auto-immune profile which includes tests for: • Mitochondrial antibody (AMA) • Smooth muscle antibody (SMA) • Liver- kidney microsomal antibody (LKM) • Gastric Parietal antibody (GPC) Gastric parietal cell antibodies (GPC) are directed against a parietal cell enzyme, the H+K+ATPase. The autoantibody is found at high frequency in association with autoimmune gastritis and a proportion of these patients will progress to develop pernicious anaemia. Gastric parietal cell antibodies are present in over 90% of patients with pernicious anaemia (Highly sensitive, but not specific). Note: Where GPC antibodies are observed within the Liver autoimmune profile, an Intrinsic factor antibody will be automatically added on.
