Fluoride EDTA (grey top)Maximum Add on Time:3 days
Complex Reference Range:FOR MONITORING DIABETES MELLITUS
National HbA1c glycaemic targets for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus are 48mmol/mol (6.5%) to 58 mmol/mol (7.5%),
providing these are safe and achievable.
FOR DIAGNOSTIC PATHWAY
HbA1c ≥ 48 mmol/mol (≥6.5%) confirms diabetes if patient is symptomatic. Two HbA1c results ≥ 48 mmol/mol (≥6.5%) are required if patient is asymptomatic. Repeat in 2 weeks.
Referred to Another Laboratory?No
Further information:HbA1c is not appropriate for diagnosis of diabetes in acute illness, pregnancy, when type 1 diabetes is suspected, duration of symptoms <2 months, and in the presence of factors that influence HbA1c and its measurement including (but not exhaustive):
States of altered red cell turnover or survival (iron or vitamin B12 deficiency, iron or erythropoietin administration, chronic liver disease, chronic kidney disease, haemoglobinopathies, splenectomy, splenomegaly, rheumatoid arthritis, medications such as antiretrovirals, ribavirin, dapsone).
Altered glycation of HbA (alcoholism, chronic renal failure, aspirin, vitamins C and E, certain haemoglobinopathies
Altered haemoglobin (haemoglobinopathies, HbF, methaemoglobin
Assay-specific factors (haemoglobinopathies, significant hypertriglyceridaemia).
