Test Category: Haematology

Investigation Name:Malaria Parasite Screen

Alias or Abbreviation:MP, Malaria LAMP, thin film

Intro:

Initial screening for malaria parasites is performed using LAMP PCR. For all positive LAMP results, a thin blood film is examined to identify the Plasmodium species and determine the level of parasitaemia where required. All positive samples are referred to the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine for confirmatory testing.

If the LAMP result is negative but there remains a strong clinical suspicion of malaria, please contact the Haematology laboratory to discuss further investigation.
