Cytology

The Cytology laboratory at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust examines both gynaecological samples i.e. Primary HPV cervical screening specimens and non-gynaecological samples including sputum, serous effusions, urine, fine needle aspirates (FNA), bronchial samples and brushings from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
All Cytopathology enquiries including technical advice and results should be directed through the Departmental Administration Office on extension number 85939 or from outside the trust: (01902) 695939.
The Cytology laboratory is responsible for the West Midlands Primary HPV cervical screening testing service and as such receives, processes, tests and reports approximately 360,000 cervical samples per annum from primary care services across the West Midlands and the following organisations:

The laboratory processes Primary HPV testing samples collected in Hologic ThinPrep sample vials only.
Patient Information
For Cervical screening samples:
Place the patient’s full name and date of birth and NHS No. on the vial.
Add all relevant patient information and medical history on the Cervical Screening requisition form.
Urgent Samples
Samples requiring urgent examination such as Pneumocystis spp. requests must be clearly marked URGENT on the request form, and this should be confirmed with the laboratory on the above telephone number to ensure that these samples can be identified on receipt and reported promptly.
High Risk Samples
Please state clearly on the request form the nature of any identified risk and attach yellow HIGH RISK stickers to both the request form and the sample.

Meet the Cytology Administration Team
Your first point of contact
The team consists of twelve members of staff who have a wide and varied knowledge of cytology screening from sending results over to Call/recall to looking after the direct referral patients which include coordinating the MDTs as well as operating the failsafe system. We also look after over 5000. Samples takers including the trainees. ‘We are a friendly team and offer a high level of support and we are always happy to help and answer your questions wherever possible.
