Erythropoietin Testing
The Black Country Pathology Services is proud to be one of the few laboratories in the United Kingdom to offer Erythropoietin Levels. The laboratory processes samples from around the United Kingdom.
Erythropoietin is a hormone which stimulates the production of red blood cells. Assessing the level of EPO may be useful in:
- Helping to identify the causes of anaemia
- Helping to identify the cause of polycythaemia
- Patients with kidney disease
- Help to identify other conditions of the bone marrow.
The testing recently transitioned from City and Sandwell hospitals to the Hub site, as a result, this assay is not currently UKAS accredited, however, all the necessary documentation has been sent through and this is currently being reviewed by the accreditation team.
The laboratory uses a BD Access II analyser for EPO testing. Samples are tested in batches and are processed weekly.
